How to get there

By airplane

The easiest way to get to San Cristobal de las Casas by airplane is flying to Tuxtla Gutierrez’s Airport. The Mexican airlines that fly to Tuxtla are Mexicana and Aeromar.  You can use a national flight search engine to get the best fares, although the average is between  1,00o and 3,000 Mexican Pesos the round trip (75 to 230 USD). Remember that early buy is always cheaper.

If you travel from another country, there are many airlines that can get you to Mexico City. In our experience, best fares are usually found 120 to 90 days before the traveling date. Expedia or any other flight search engine may be useful.

Once you arrive at Tuxtla Gutiérrez, you will have to take a taxi to San Cristobal. It takes more or less 45 minutes to get there and the taxi will charge you around 600 Mexican Pesos. Our advice is that you look for one or two other persons to share the taxi (depending on the date you arrive, it’s possible you meet a lot of people that is also going to the Conference), this way, each of you can pay only 200 Mexican Pesos.

By bus

There are many bus lines that get to Tuxtla Gutierrez from Mexico City. The trip takes about 13 hours and fares go from 1,500 to 2,200 Mexican Pesos for a round trip (115 to 170 USD). You can find more information and even make a reservation at  Ticket Bus. The great advantage of traveling by bus is that you will arrive directly to San Cristobal’s bus station.

If you travel from other city is possible that you’ll need to change bus somewhere. Our advice is that you check very well the sation from which you will depart, because there are cities (like Mexico City or Monterrey) that have more than one bus stations.

By car

If you decide to drive, please take into consideration our advice:

  1. Don’t travel alone. Depending from where you are coming from, it can be a long drive and you will need to rest.
  2. Travel only during day time. Nearby roads can be narrow and complicated. Alaso, there is ussually fog that clouds all visibility. You can fin people or animals crossing at all times.
  3. Make a good trip plan. Consider rest and gas stops. There are some areas without cell phone coberture and some others with very few gas sattions available.
  4. If you eat something in the road, always prefer cooked meals and bottle soda. Local “tamalitos” are usually safe and really delicious.
